About Praia do Rei
Praia do Rei (King's Beach) is a laid-back, uncrowded spot that has a neighbourhood feel. Located in the southern-central stretch of the Caparica coast, it offers mellow, forgiving waves that are ideal for beginners and longboarders looking for a quiet session away from the busier breaks.
The beach has a relaxed, local character without the trendy beach bars of some neighbouring spots. Surfers here tend to be mellow and welcoming, making it a comfortable place for less experienced surfers to practise. The long, gently breaking waves are particularly well suited for longboarding and log riding.
Surf Conditions
Praia do Rei picks up west to northwest swells and produces gentle, crumbly waves over the sandy bottom. Knee to chest-high conditions are ideal, providing enough energy for longboarding and learning without being intimidating. East to northeast winds are offshore.
Spring and summer offer the best conditions for the beginner audience — small, consistent swells with warm weather. Autumn can also be excellent, with slightly bigger waves and fewer people. Winter brings more powerful swells that may be too much for beginners but fun for intermediate longboarders.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June-September) or by car along the coastal road. Parking at the beach access points.
Facilities are minimal — a seasonal beach bar may operate in summer. The quiet, low-key nature is part of the appeal. Lifeguards patrol from June to September. For more amenities, head north towards the town centre or south to Fonte da Telha.
