About Praia do Castelo
Praia do Castelo is a step up from the average Caparica beach break. Located in the central-south section of the coast, it benefits from underwater channels that create more stable sandbar formations, producing well-defined A-frame peaks that break with more power and hollow sections than most neighbouring spots.
The name 'Castelo' (Castle) adds a touch of character to this underrated spot. It is popular with intermediate to advanced surfers who seek out the faster, more hollow waves that form here, particularly on solid winter swells. The relatively uncrowded lineup is another major draw.
Surf Conditions
Castelo works best on west to northwest swells, with the underwater channels focusing the swell energy onto the sandbars. This creates A-frame peaks with both good lefts and rights, though the rights tend to be more consistent. East to northeast winds are offshore.
Autumn and winter are the prime seasons, when solid swells produce overhead waves with hollow, fast sections. Low to mid tide often brings the best shape. The spot can handle more size than most Caparica beaches, making it a good option when other spots are closing out. Rip currents develop on bigger days.

Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June-September) or by car along the coastal road. Parking at the beach access points.
A seasonal beach bar may operate during summer. Facilities are minimal outside of the summer season. Lifeguards are present from June to September. The nearest year-round services are in the town centre or at Fonte da Telha to the south.
