About Praia do Tarquínio-Paraíso
Praia do Tarquínio-Paraíso is a family-friendly beach located just south of the main CDS area. It marks the beginning of the more relaxed, less urbanised stretch of the Caparica coastline. The beach is named after two adjoining areas — Tarquínio and Paraíso — that together form a wide, welcoming stretch of sand.
Underwater channels and gentle sandbars create predictable, well-formed waves that are ideal for beginners and surf schools. The consistent, forgiving nature of the waves here has made it one of the go-to spots for surf lessons along the coast. In summer, lifeguards patrol the beach, adding an extra layer of safety.
Surf Conditions
Tarquínio-Paraíso picks up west to northwest swells reliably and transforms them into gentle, well-shaped waves thanks to the gradual sand bottom. Knee to chest-high conditions are ideal, providing enough push for beginners to practise catching waves while remaining manageable.
Spring and summer are the best seasons, when smaller swells combine with warm weather and lifeguard cover. East to northeast winds are offshore here, keeping the wave faces clean. In winter, the spot can get too powerful for beginners, but intermediate surfers will find solid peaks.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June-September) or by car along the coastal road. Parking is available at the beach access points and along the road.
Beach bars operate during summer months, serving drinks and light meals. Lifeguards patrol from June to September. Basic facilities including showers are available at the main access points. Several surf schools operate from this beach during the summer season.
