About CDS (Praia do CDS)
CDS, also known as Praia do CDS, is the most famous surf spot along the Costa da Caparica coast. It is the home of competitive surfing in the region, regularly hosting national and international surf contests. The name CDS refers to the Centro de Desportos do Surf (Surf Sports Centre), which has been the focal point of the local surf community for decades.
What makes CDS special is the system of seven concrete groynes (jetties) that extend into the sea, creating well-defined channels and shaping reliable sandbars between each pair. This produces multiple quality peaks with both lefts and rights, giving surfers plenty of options depending on the conditions and crowd levels.
Surf Conditions
CDS responds well to west and northwest swells, which are channelled between the jetties to create clean, well-shaped peaks. The groynes provide paddle-out channels alongside the rocks, making it easier to reach the lineup even on bigger days. Offshore winds from the east keep conditions groomed.
This is a year-round wave that works at all tides. Winter brings the most powerful and consistent conditions, with overhead waves that attract the best local surfers. In summer, smaller swells are perfect for beginners and intermediates, with the sheltered bays between jetties offering gentle, manageable waves.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car from Costa da Caparica town. Parking available along the seafront road and in designated lots. The spot is walkable from the town centre and well connected by bus from Lisbon via Cacilhas.
CDS has excellent facilities including multiple surf schools, board rental shops, and beachfront cafés and restaurants. Lifeguards patrol during summer. Showers and changing rooms are available. This is the most developed surf area on the Caparica coast.
