About Praia Nova
Praia Nova is a quieter stretch of beach located between the busier town-centre breaks and the beaches further south. It offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the popular CDS and São João spots, making it appealing for surfers who prefer fewer people in the water.
The beach break here produces gentle, forgiving waves that are well suited for beginners and those looking for a mellow session. Without the influence of groynes, the sandbars shift naturally, creating multiple peaks that spread the crowd across the beach. The relaxed vibe and easy waves have made it a favourite among longboarders and surf schools.

Surf Conditions
Praia Nova picks up west to northwest swells and breaks gently over sandy bottom. Knee to chest-high conditions are ideal, providing fun, manageable waves for learning and progressing. East to northeast winds provide offshore conditions.
Spring and summer are the best seasons for beginners, with smaller, more consistent swells and warmer water. Autumn can also produce excellent conditions. In winter, bigger swells may make the spot less suitable for beginners, though experienced surfers can find powerful peaks on the outer banks.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June-September) or by car/walking along the coast. Parking is available along the road behind the beach.
Beach bars open during summer, offering food and drinks right on the sand. The town centre is accessible on foot or by the car or bike. Lifeguards patrol in summer. Basic facilities like showers are available during the beach season.
