About Praia do Dragão Vermelho
Praia do Dragão Vermelho (Red Dragon Beach) sits just south of the main town centre, accessible via the seafront promenade. The memorable name comes from a former beach bar that became a local landmark. It is a no-frills, dependable beach break that delivers consistent waves throughout the year.
The beach occupies a transitional zone between the groyne-protected CDS area to the north and the more open stretches to the south. This positioning means it catches good swell while still benefiting from some sandbar stability. It is popular with local intermediate surfers who appreciate the uncrowded peaks and easy access.
Surf Conditions
Dragão Vermelho works well with west to northwest swells, producing peaks that shift along the beach depending on sandbar formations. Waist to head-high conditions are ideal. East to northeast offshore winds create clean, surfable faces on the wave.
This is a year-round wave, though autumn and winter bring the most consistent conditions. The sandbars shift regularly, so it pays to watch the lineup from the beach before paddling out. Rip currents can develop between sandbars on bigger days, so some experience in reading ocean conditions is recommended.

Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June-September) or by car/walking along the coast from the town centre. Parking is available along the coastal road.
Beach bars operate during summer months with food and drinks. The town centre is a short walk north, where you will find restaurants, shops, and other amenities. Lifeguards patrol in summer. Basic showers are available at beach access points.
