About Sesimbra Harbour Point

Sesimbra Harbour Point is one of the most unique and elusive waves in the greater Lisbon region. Tucked inside the sheltered harbour of the fishing town of Sesimbra, it is a left-hand point break that only fires on south swells — an uncommon swell direction on this coast. When it does work, it is a genuine gem.

The wave wraps around the harbour wall and breaks along a rocky bottom, producing long, well-shaped lefts that can run for 50 to 100 metres on the best days. The rarity of the conditions means it is never crowded, and the charming town of Sesimbra — with its castle, fishing boats, and seafood restaurants — makes for an excellent surf trip destination.

Surf Conditions

Sesimbra Harbour only works on south to southeast swells, which are relatively rare on this stretch of coast. Southwest swells can also activate the break. The harbour provides shelter from the dominant northwest swell and wind, meaning this spot works when everywhere else is blown out or too big.

Winter is the most likely season for the required south swell, typically generated by weather systems tracking across the Mediterranean or unusual storm patterns. Low tide is essential for the wave to break properly over the rock shelf. North, northwest, or northeast winds are offshore. When all the elements align, it is a truly special wave worth the trip.

⚠️Safety warning: This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers. Rocks, sea urchins, strong currents are hazards to be aware of. Always check conditions before paddling out and never surf here alone.
