About Praia da Foz (Cabo Espichel)

Praia da Foz, near the dramatic headland of Cabo Espichel, is widely considered the best wave in the Sesimbra region. It is a hollow left-hander that breaks over a flat rock reef, producing barrelling waves that are more reminiscent of reef breaks in the Canary Islands than typical Portuguese surf. The setting, beneath ancient cliffs near a historic pilgrimage sanctuary, is spectacular.

This is a serious, advanced-level wave that demands respect. The rock reef is shallow, the currents are strong, and sea urchins line the rocks. When conditions come together β€” solid west swell, east-southeast winds, and a low to mid tide β€” Praia da Foz delivers one of the most thrilling surf experiences in the Lisbon region.

Surf Conditions

Praia da Foz needs a clean west swell to work properly, as the reef is positioned to catch westerly energy. Chest-high to overhead is the ideal size range β€” beyond that, it becomes dangerous. East-southeast winds are offshore, keeping the wave faces clean and allowing the barrels to form.

Winter is the only season with consistent conditions. The wave works best on a low to mid tide, when the reef creates the hollow shape. On high tide, the wave fattens and loses its power. This is a reef break with real consequences β€” rocks, urchins, and currents are all hazards. Only paddle out if you are an experienced, confident surfer.

⚠️Safety warning: This spot is best suited for advanced surfers. Rocks, sea urchins, strong currents are hazards to be aware of. Always check conditions before paddling out and never surf here alone.
