About Praia do Meco

Praia do Meco is a long, powerful beach break at the northern edge of the Sesimbra coastline, marking the transition from the Caparica coast to the wilder, more exposed southern shores. The beach stretches for several kilometres, backed by high cliffs and pine forest, giving it a raw, natural character.

The waves at Meco are significantly more powerful than the typical Caparica beach breaks to the north. The beach is fully exposed to the open Atlantic, picking up swell from multiple directions, and the sandbars can produce heavy, hollow waves that attract experienced surfers. The uncrowded lineup and dramatic setting make it a special place to surf.

Surf Conditions

Meco is one of the most versatile spots in the region for swell direction, picking up northwest, west, and southwest swells effectively. The exposed position means it is often bigger and more powerful than spots further north. Southeast to east to northeast winds provide offshore conditions.

Winter is the prime season, with consistent, powerful swells creating heavy, hollow peaks along the beach. The strong rip currents and shallow sandbars make this an advanced-level spot — do not underestimate the power here. Autumn also delivers excellent conditions. Summer is generally small but can still produce fun waves.

⚠️Safety warning: This spot is best suited for advanced surfers. Strong currents, shallow sandbars, rocks are hazards to be aware of. Always check conditions before paddling out and never surf here alone.

Getting There & Facilities

Drive via the EN379 from Sesimbra or from the A33 motorway. Parking is available at the cliff-top car parks with paths leading down to the beach.

The Meco area has some excellent restaurants serving traditional Portuguese seafood, particularly in the small village above the cliff. Beach facilities are seasonal. There are no lifeguards for much of the beach — surf with caution and bring your own supplies.
