About Santo António da Caparica

Santo António da Caparica sits just south of the main CDS competition zone, in an area where the coastline begins to transition from the groyne-protected beaches to more open, exposed stretches. This positioning means it receives more raw swell energy, producing powerful and often challenging waves.

The beach is named after the small neighbourhood that backs it, a quieter residential area compared to the busier town centre to the north. It is a local favourite for experienced surfers looking for more powerful conditions without having to travel far from town.

Surf Conditions

Santo António needs a solid west or south swell to really come alive. When it does, the open exposure creates powerful, fast-breaking waves with hollow sections on the better sandbars. North to northeast offshore winds are ideal, providing a different wind angle to most Caparica spots.

Autumn and winter are the prime seasons, with Atlantic storms generating consistent overhead surf. The shifting sandbars can create strong rip currents, so local knowledge is valuable. Summer tends to be much smaller and calmer, though occasional south swells can still produce rideable waves.

⚠️Safety warning: This spot is best suited for advanced surfers. Strong currents, shifting sandbars are hazards to be aware of. Always check conditions before paddling out and never surf here alone.

Getting There & Facilities

Accessible by car from Costa da Caparica town. Parking available along the residential streets behind the beach and at small pull-off areas near the access paths.

Facilities are more limited than at the town centre beaches. A few local restaurants and cafés are within walking distance in the Santo António neighbourhood. Lifeguards patrol during summer. Bring your own water and supplies for winter sessions.
