About São João da Caparica
São João da Caparica is one of the longest and most spacious beaches along the Costa da Caparica coastline, stretching approximately 1.4 kilometres between two jetties. Its generous size means there is always room to spread out, making it a popular choice for surfers of all levels looking to avoid the crowds that can build up at more central breaks.
The beach sits just north of the main CDS competition area, giving it easy access to shops, restaurants, and surf schools. São João has become the heart of Caparica's surf community, with several surf schools, camps, and rental shops operating directly from the beachfront.
Surf Conditions
São João works best with west to northwest swells, which produce consistent peaks along the entire stretch. The jetties at either end help to shape reliable sandbars, creating well-defined A-frame peaks. Offshore winds from the east or southeast clean things up for quality sessions.
This is a year-round wave, though autumn and winter bring the most consistent and powerful swells. In summer, smaller swells still produce fun waist-high waves perfect for learners and longboarders. The wide beach means you can usually find an uncrowded peak.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car from Costa da Caparica town. Parking available along the seafront and in designated lots behind the beach. The The Transpraia beach train (closed since 2019) used to stop nearby — check transpraia.org for reopening updates.
São João has the best concentration of surf amenities on the coast — multiple surf schools, board rental shacks, beach bars and restaurants operating year-round. Lifeguards patrol during summer. Showers and changing facilities are available at the main beach access points.
