About Praia da Mata
Praia da Mata sits along the central Caparica coast, nestled beside the pine forests that give the beach its name. Located between Praia da Saúde and Praia da Cornélia, it offers a tranquil setting away from the busier beaches closer to town. Surf schools operate here regularly, taking advantage of the consistent, forgiving waves and the wide sandy stretch that provides plenty of room for learners.
During summer, the Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) used to connect Praia da Mata to the rest of the coast, making it easy to reach without a car. The pine-backed dunes create a natural, almost rural atmosphere that attracts surfers of all levels who prefer a quieter session. Whether you are catching your first white-water wave or practising cutbacks, Praia da Mata delivers reliable conditions in a peaceful environment.
Surf Conditions
Praia da Mata works best on west to northwest swells, which reach the beach consistently throughout the year. The sandy bottom produces a forgiving beach break with multiple shifting peaks, making it an excellent spot for surf schools and riders of all abilities.
East to northeast winds are offshore here and create the cleanest conditions. The wave is dependable and approachable on most days, breaking gently enough for beginners while still offering shape for more experienced surfers when the swell picks up.
Getting There & Facilities
Accessible by car or bike along the coastal path. The Transpraia beach train (currently closed since 2019) may reopen in future (June–September) or by car along the coast. Parking is available at the nearby access points.
A seasonal beach bar operates during the summer months, and the restaurant Praia da Mata is located nearby. Lifeguards are on duty from June to September. For additional services, the Costa da Caparica town centre is a short ride away by Transpraia or car.
