About Fonte da Telha
Fonte da Telha is a small, traditional fishing village perched at the base of the dramatic Arriba Fóssil (Fossil Cliff), a protected geological formation that stretches along the southern Caparica coast. The village retains an authentic, old-world charm with its weathered wooden houses and fishing boats pulled up on the sand.
The surf here is mellow and forgiving, offering a welcome alternative to the more powerful northern breaks. Fonte da Telha is particularly valued as a go-to spot when big northwest swells make the main Caparica beaches too powerful — the southern position and slight west-southwest swell window filter out some of the energy, keeping waves manageable for all levels.
Surf Conditions
Fonte da Telha works best on west to west-southwest swells, with the southern position filtering out some of the dominant northwest swell energy. This means it is often smaller and more manageable than the northern beaches. Waist to head-high conditions are ideal. East to east-northeast offshore winds groom the waves.
Winter is the best season, when powerful Atlantic swells are large enough that even the filtered energy reaching Fonte da Telha produces quality waves. The spot serves as a reliable fallback on big swell days when the northern beaches are maxing out. Autumn also produces good conditions. Summer can be quite flat.
Getting There & Facilities
Drive south from Costa da Caparica along the EN377. Parking at the beach access points and in the village. The road down to the village is steep and narrow.
Fonte da Telha has several traditional fish restaurants and beach bars that serve excellent grilled seafood. Surf schools and rental shops operate from the village. Lifeguards patrol in summer. The village atmosphere is authentic and welcoming, with a strong local fishing community.
