About Praia da Adiça
Praia da Adiça is one of the most remote and dramatic beaches on the Caparica coast. Set beneath towering fossil cliffs — part of the protected Arriba Fóssil landscape — it offers a genuinely wild surf experience. The beach is also an unofficial naturist beach, adding to its alternative, back-to-nature character.
Getting to Adiça requires effort — a steep path down the cliff face or a long walk along the beach — which keeps the crowds away. Those who make the trek are rewarded with uncrowded peaks, dramatic scenery, and a sense of isolation that is rare on a coast so close to Lisbon. It is a favourite among adventurous intermediate surfers.
Surf Conditions
Adiça picks up west to northwest swells and breaks over a wide, sandy bottom. Waist to overhead conditions are ideal. The exposed position means it catches good swell, producing peaks with more power than the more sheltered spots. East to northeast winds are offshore.
Autumn and winter deliver the best and most consistent conditions. The remote location means there are no lifeguards outside of peak summer, so surfers should be self-reliant and comfortable in challenging conditions. Rip currents are common, and the cliff-backed setting means there is limited access in or out of the water.
⚠️Safety warning: This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers. Rip currents, shifting sandbars, remote location are hazards to be aware of. Always check conditions before paddling out and never surf here alone.
Getting There & Facilities
Drive south from Costa da Caparica along the EN377. Access is via steep cliff paths — check conditions before descending. Parking at the cliff-top pull-offs.
There are no facilities at this beach — no bars, restaurants, showers, or lifeguards (except possibly in peak summer). This is a truly wild beach. Bring all your own water, food, and first aid supplies. The nearest services are at Fonte da Telha to the north.
